Volunteers are continuing efforts to address what is believed to be one of Europe’s largest nurdle pollution incidents, following a shipping accident on the River Tyne. The environmental contamination occurred on July 19, after two ships collided and caused a gantry crane to collapse, releasing approximately one billion plastic pellets into the waterway.

Nurdles, which are small, disc-shaped plastic pellets, serve as the foundational raw material for the production of most plastic goods. Their presence in the environment has raised concerns due to their potential impact on marine ecosystems. A recent study by the environmental charity Fidra found nurdles present at 84% of the United Kingdom’s sites of special scientific interest, underscoring the widespread nature of this pollutant.

Since the incident, thousands of volunteers from the Nurdle Clean Up Communities spanning North Shields, South Shields, Northumberland, and Sunderland have mobilized to collect the pellets from local beaches and shoreline areas. Efforts have focused on minimizing the spread of nurdles and preventing further environmental damage in the River Tyne region.

This week, volunteers engaged with representatives from the Port of Tyne to coordinate ongoing cleanup operations. Matt Beeton, the Port of Tyne’s managing director, emphasized the importance of collaboration, stating that the meeting helped establish crucial communication channels among stakeholders involved in the remediation efforts.

The incident has highlighted the risks associated with maritime transport of plastic raw materials and sparked discussions on improving safety protocols to prevent similar occurrences in the future. Cleanup activities are expected to continue as environmental groups and local authorities work together to mitigate the pollution’s effects on the river and surrounding areas.
