Matthew Peter Casale and Emily Brock Sherron’s relationship began in September 2021 after they connected on the dating app Hinge. Both avid readers, their initial conversations centered around literature, with Casale reading a book Sherron recommended to deepen their connection. At the time, both were living in the Norfolk, Virginia area: Casale served as a lieutenant in the U.S. Navy, while Sherron worked on the re-election campaign for Rep. Elaine Luria, a Democrat from Virginia.

Their first meeting took place at Saltine, a seafood restaurant in Norfolk, where mutual attraction was immediate. The couple found that their conversations quickly moved beyond surface topics, with Sherron seeking to understand Casale’s motivations, background, and aspirations. They also shared a common enthusiasm for returning to New York City, where Casale was born and raised in Ridgewood, New Jersey, and Sherron had earned her political science degree from Columbia University after growing up in Houston.

Following their initial date, the pair quickly became inseparable, taking a hiking trip the following weekend and integrating their social circles within the first month. Casale asked Sherron to be his girlfriend just before Thanksgiving 2021. Before committing to the relationship, Sherron asked detailed questions about Casale’s family, political views, and career plans, all of which he answered to her satisfaction.

The couple’s relationship was tested in fall 2022 when Casale was deployed on a Navy mission in the Mediterranean Sea. After missing a call from him due to limited access to communications on the ship, Sherron made the unexpected decision to visit Europe during her transitional employment period. She traveled to Naval Station Rota in Spain, where they reunited briefly and took a road trip through Andalusia. During this time, they discussed their future plans, including moving to New York City after Casale’s deployment. They soon put those plans into motion, relocating to Manhattan’s Upper West Side in January 2023.

In New York, Casale pursued an MBA at the NYU Stern School of Business and later joined Bain & Company as a consultant. Meanwhile, Sherron became the associate director for institutional giving at the nonprofit organization Everytown for Gun Safety.

The couple’s engagement proposal took place during a winter weekend in Stowe, Vermont, in February 2025. Inspired by a recent trip to Austria with Sherron’s parents, Casale proposed inside the Chapel in the Woods at the Trapp Family Lodge & Resort amid heavy snowfall and frigid temperatures. Sherron accepted, describing the day as the most joyful of their lives.

Casale and Sherron were married on June 6 at Riverside Church in Morningside Heights, New York, with the Rev. Tim Dalton officiating before 180 guests. The couple marked a symbolic moment by cutting their wedding cake with a Navy sword, followed by lively celebrations that included a “Dirty Dancing”-style dance finale, highlighting the joyous occasion.
