The New England Patriots secured a 29-26 victory over the Buffalo Bills Sunday, highlighted by a pivotal one-handed touchdown catch from wide receiver Efton Chism late in the game. The catch, which was featured prominently in postgame highlights, drew attention not only for its athleticism but also for Chism’s rise from minimal playing time earlier in the season.
Buffalo defensive back C.J. Gardner-Johnson, a 2019 fourth-round NFL draft pick who has played for multiple teams in recent years, commented on Chism’s performance, describing the catch as impressive but hinting that the undrafted receiver may not be a significant factor moving forward. “A [practice squad] guy made a hell of a catch,” Gardner-Johnson said after the game. He also expressed his view that his team was the superior one despite the loss.
Patriots head coach Mike Vrabel, known for his straightforward communication style, responded during his weekly radio appearance on WEEI’s “The Greg Hill Show.” Vrabel referenced Gardner-Johnson’s journey through eight teams in four years, implying that such experiences offer perspective on the league’s realities.
Vrabel emphasized Chism’s dedication and work ethic, noting the receiver’s significant improvement and increased involvement in the offense. A 2025 undrafted free agent, Chism had only 26 offensive snaps in the first three games but played 34 snaps in Sunday’s contest. “Nobody works harder,” Vrabel said. “He practices, he’s on the show team, he takes a million reps, nobody logs more miles or yards or whatever we track than [Chism].”
When asked about Chism’s role moving forward, the Patriots coach confirmed that more opportunities are likely as Chism continues to prove his value. “Guys continue to take advantage of their opportunities, they get more opportunities,” Vrabel remarked. He added that the coaching staff has been working to integrate Chism into the offense in a balanced manner and expects the receiver to maintain his versatility across multiple positions.
The Patriots’ win over the Bills marked a closely contested game, with Chism’s clutch catch playing a decisive role in the outcome and spotlighting the impact players can have when seizing limited chances on the field.
