Bastien Tronchon secured a surprise victory on stage 10 of the Vuelta a España on Tuesday, emerging victorious in a closely contested bunch sprint. The French rider, representing Groupama-FDJ, crossed the finish line ahead of Magnus Cort Nielsen and Thibau Nys, who narrowly outpaced Wout van Aert to round out the podium.

The 184.7-kilometer route stretched from Alcaraz to Elche de la Sierra and saw an early breakaway of seven riders establish a lead. However, the peloton, managed by teams Vismalease a Bike and Cofidis, maintained control, gradually reeling in the escapees. With about 10 kilometers remaining, only Michael Gogl and Fredrik Dversnes remained ahead, but their advantage was short-lived as the main group closed in.

In the final kilometer, Yevgeniy Fedorov and Xabier Azparren launched late attacks but were caught just before the finish, allowing Tronchon to time his sprint perfectly. Upon crossing the line, the young rider appeared uncertain of his win, touching his helmet in surprise and becoming emotional as teammates celebrated alongside him.

Enric Mas maintained the overall race lead, keeping the red jersey safely as the general classification positions behind him remain tightly contested by Primoz Roglic and Felix Gall. The race narrative has been notably affected by the withdrawal of five-time Tour de France winner Tadej Pogacar, who was favored to contend for overall victory before a heavy crash on Saturday resulted in a broken collarbone, forcing him out of the competition.

Looking ahead, stage 11 on Wednesday covers 153.8 kilometers from Cartagena to Lorca. While the terrain is predominantly flat and expected to favor sprinters, the category-three climb up Morrón de Totana near the stage’s conclusion presents a potential challenge in the final kilometers.
