Musician and producer Vivian McConnell, known by her stage name V.V. Lightbody, has returned with a new album after a six-year hiatus from solo work. Her latest release, "Period Piece," debuted on October 9 through Egghunt Records, marking a significant moment in her evolving career as both an artist and producer.
Since the 2020 release of her previous solo album, "Make a Shrine or Burn It," McConnell has remained active in the music scene, collaborating with a variety of artists. She has played bass for the band Finom and appeared on stage with acts including Elizabeth Moen, Twin Peaks, and Fruit Bats. In 2024, she contributed to Valebol’s self-titled debut alongside musician Daniel Villarreal. Alongside her performances, McConnell launched a side project dubbed “album doula,” focusing on producing records predominantly for female musicians.
“Period Piece” is McConnell’s first album where she takes the lead on production. The record reflects themes of personal growth and the challenge of loosening control over oneself and one’s environment. McConnell, who describes herself as a people pleaser, said the album explores the balance between giving to others and making space for her own needs.
The album was shaped in part by experiences following the COVID-19 pandemic. The opening track, “Practice Smiling,” draws on the awkwardness and relief in the early days after lockdowns eased when people were learning to interact socially again. McConnell noted that the process of healing involved recognizing physical and emotional tension she had been holding onto, inspiring the record’s broader motif of “loosening the life corset.”
Other songs on the album address self-reflection and emotional complexity. “Dull Knife” contemplates self-improvement while embracing imperfections, “Precious Moments” touches on vulnerability and defensiveness, and “Patience Like a Pilot” emphasizes the importance of self-compassion and gradual healing. McConnell described the tone of the album as carrying moments of humor and irony alongside heartfelt introspection.
Returning to the V.V. Lightbody project allowed McConnell to reengage with her creative voice after years of supporting other artists. She views “Period Piece” as both a personal and artistic statement, aimed at listeners who tend to overthink and wrestle with internal pressures.
“I’m taking this career seriously,” McConnell said. “I’m still figuring out who I am, but I’m doing it through this record. It feels really powerful.”
Overall, the album represents a phase of renewal and recalibration for McConnell, who is committed to embracing her role as a musician who occupies space with intention and authenticity.
