Wakefield Trinity secured a 20-9 victory over Hull Kingston Rovers at Hull KR’s home ground on Sunday, moving up to third place in the Super League standings. Central to the win were two second-half tries by prop forward Caius Faatili, who crossed the try line twice within a seven-minute span to break a 6-6 deadlock and steer Trinity to their fourth consecutive win.
The match started evenly, with Wakefield’s Harvey Smith scoring an early try, complemented by a successful goal kick from Tyson Smoothy. However, Hull KR responded with three penalties converted by Rhyse Martin, keeping the score level through the first half. The breakthrough came in the second period when Faatili powered over twice, with Smoothy converting both tries and adding a late penalty goal in the 62nd minute to cement the win.
The victory was significant not only for Trinity's league position—advancing them into third—but also because it ended Hull KR’s impressive run of 11 straight home wins in Super League competition. The result caused the reigning champions to drop to fifth place.
Wakefield coach Daryl Powell praised his team's performance, highlighting the strength displayed after halftime. "Our second-half performance was outstanding," he said, emphasizing the team's resilience and execution during critical moments.
Conversely, Hull KR coach Willie Peters expressed disappointment at the loss, reflecting on the end of what had been a dominant home record. He described the outcome as "very disappointing," underscoring the challenges the team now faces in regaining their earlier form.
The match illustrated the competitive nature of the league and the fine margins that can shift momentum and league standings, with Wakefield capitalizing on key opportunities to secure back-to-back victories and establish themselves firmly in the upper tier of the table.
