Under the ownership of Matt Ellis, who took control of the club three years ago, and the guidance of head coach Daryl Powell, Wakefield have defied expectations, moving from the competition’s lower tiers to genuine contenders for the Grand Final.
After dominating the Championship in 2024, Wakefield secured a playoff spot in their first season back in the Super League last year. While analysts anticipated a tougher challenge this season, the club maintained its momentum and eased into the semi-finals with a convincing 24-12 victory over Leigh in West Yorkshire. The win came despite losing prop Emre Guler to a red card following an altercation late in the match.
The game was largely controlled by Wakefield from the outset. Tyson Smoothy and Tom Johnstone scored tries to build an early advantage, with Leigh’s David Armstrong responding just before halftime to close the gap. However, Wakefield extended their lead soon after the break with a try from Isaiah Vagana, followed by another from Caius Faatili, creating a comfortable margin. Even after Guler’s dismissal for striking Leigh’s Owen Trout, the home side maintained their composure.
Leigh briefly threatened to shift momentum when Lachlan Lam scored with 15 minutes remaining and later Innes Senior crossed the try line. Yet, Wakefield’s defence held firm, supported by a penalty from Max Jowitt, securing their place in the final four. Leigh’s head coach Adrian Lam expressed disappointment in his team’s second-half performance, noting a poor start after halftime diminished their chances.
Powell highlighted the club’s rapid progress since returning to the Super League, emphasizing the strong position the team and organization find themselves in. Wakefield will now face either Wigan or Leeds for a spot in the Super League Grand Final at Old Trafford. Despite entering the semi-finals as underdogs, the club’s recent form and resilience suggest they cannot be discounted as they seek to continue making history.
