Penybont manager Rhys Griffiths described his team’s 2-1 victory at Caernarfon Town as a “significant triumph” despite the new Novira Cymru Premier season being only two rounds old. Following a goalless draw against reigning champions The New Saints in the opening weekend, Penybont came from behind on Friday to defeat the Welsh Cup holders.
Caernarfon took an early lead through Zach Clarke, who capitalized on an excellent cross from Adrian Cieslewicz within the first five minutes. However, Penybont’s summer signings Tom Mehew and Ryan Hill responded swiftly, with Mehew scoring a curling effort in the 19th minute and Hill converting a penalty just before halftime. The match also featured disallowed goals for Caernarfon by Noah Edwards and Osian Evans, both ruled out for offside following VAR review.
Griffiths emphasized the importance of the early victory, noting the competitive ambitions of both sides to challenge The New Saints this season.
Cardiff Metropolitan University (Cardiff Met), who struggled with relegation battles last season, have started the 2026-27 campaign strongly with two wins from two matches. After a 6-1 home victory over newly promoted Holywell Town in Round 1, Cardiff Met secured a 2-1 win against Airbus UK Broughton. The visitors took the lead through Ryan Reynolds’ long-range strike before Jasper Payne added a second goal, marking his fourth of the season.
Llandudno, the other promoted side from the Cymru North as 2026 champions, maintained their positive momentum with a 4-0 win at Trefelin. Harvey Bennett scored twice alongside a brace from Callum Stephens, all within the first half, reinforcing their strong start following a 3-2 home win against Flint Town United.
Trefelin remain at the bottom of the table after the opening two rounds, having secured only one point and a single goal. Meanwhile, the other two promoted teams from the Cymru South both earned draws. Ammanford rallied from two goals down to claim a 2-2 draw against Colwyn Bay at The Recreation Ground, with Jonathan Evans and Matthew Delaney scoring in the second half. Delaney’s penalty in the 85th minute sealed the comeback after Adam Davies and Matty Hill had put Colwyn Bay ahead early in the match.
Cambrian United opened their top-flight home campaign with a header from Tom Walters, but Briton Ferry Llansawel equalized, resulting in a 1-1 draw. In another late drama, Barry Town United secured a 3-2 victory over Flint Town United thanks to Owen Brain’s winner two minutes from the final whistle.
The previous season’s top two teams, The New Saints and Connah’s Quay Nomads, both recorded wins. TNS secured a 2-0 home victory over Haverfordwest County with goals from Josh Lock and Rhys Hughes, while the Nomads claimed a 3-0 win at Holywell Town.
