A pedestrian was fatally struck by a vehicle early Saturday near an offramp of the 110 Freeway in downtown Los Angeles. The incident occurred just after 4 a.m. near the intersection of West 8th Place and Garland Avenue, according to the Los Angeles Fire Department.
Emergency responders arrived at the scene to find one person deceased and another injured individual who was transported to a hospital. A department spokesperson, Lyndsey Lantz, confirmed the fatality and the hospitalization.
California Highway Patrol officers remained at the scene for several hours investigating the crash. All lanes of the affected area were reopened to traffic shortly after 9 a.m. A CHP dispatcher reported that one person had been arrested in connection with the incident, but details regarding charges had not been released by Saturday afternoon.
Video footage from the scene showed officers gathered around a black Cadillac sedan with visible damage to its front passenger side, including a broken headlight and a dented fender. A person was seen sitting on the pavement behind the vehicle, speaking with officers. After some time, this individual was walked around the scene by officers. Later, the same person covered their face with a Spider-Man blanket and collapsed, expressing visible distress as they were comforted by another individual.
The circumstances leading to the crash, including whether the pedestrian was crossing legally or if impairment was a factor, have not yet been disclosed. Authorities continue to investigate the exact chain of events that resulted in the fatal collision.
