Sam Walker and Junior Paulo have both indicated a strong likelihood of remaining with their current NRL clubs as the Rugby League World Cup approaches. Walker, a premiership winner with the Sydney Roosters and Australia’s designated halfback for the tournament, expressed optimism about re-signing with the Roosters, citing the club’s professionalism and sustained competitiveness as key factors in his decision.

Walker, speaking ahead of the World Cup kickoff, highlighted the club’s commitment to success and the strength of its current roster. “We’re in a really good position with the players that we have in the club at the moment and the people that we have in the club to continue to be successful for a very long time,” he said. While he deferred contract negotiations to his management and the club, he confirmed that staying with the Roosters is his intention.

Meanwhile, Junior Paulo, the experienced Parramatta Eels forward, is nearing an agreement on a contract extension after several months of discussions. Parramatta officials expressed confidence that Paulo will accept the 12-month deal offered to him. Paulo acknowledged that he had considered a two-year offer from the West Coast Eagles in Perth but ultimately decided to remain with the Eels to conclude his career there. He emphasized the importance of personal and family happiness alongside professional considerations.

“It’s just one of those things where I thought I really wanted to stay at Parra,” Paulo said. The Eels have also proposed a post-playing career role for Paulo, signaling a long-term relationship beyond his active playing days. At 32 years old, Paulo remains hopeful of finalizing a deal soon.

Both players participated in the World Cup launch event held on Saturday at Sydney’s Allianz Stadium, just days ahead of the tournament opener between Australia and New Zealand on Thursday. Samoa is set to begin its campaign with a match against France on Friday.

Reflecting on his current situation, Paulo remarked, “I am here at World Cup at the moment, so we’ll see what happens, but it’s something management is working through it for the time being.” He also expressed satisfaction with his recent form, which positions him well for his ongoing international commitments.

The indications from Walker and Paulo suggest stability within their respective squads as they prepare for the World Cup, underscoring the importance both players place on continuity and strong club foundations heading into the international competition.
