Ireland extended their winning streak against Australia to six consecutive matches, prevailing 33-31 in a closely contested Nations Championship opener at Sydney’s Allianz Stadium on Saturday night. The match was marked by multiple lead changes and intense back-and-forth action, with Ireland rallying from a halftime deficit to secure victory in front of a record crowd of 41,971.
The Wallabies held a 24-12 lead at the interval, but Ireland narrowed the gap with a score after the halftime siren through halfback Jamison Gibson-Park. The visitors eventually took the lead in the 57th minute following a try by Irish captain Dan Sheehan after a rolling maul. However, the try was later disallowed after a review showed Ireland lock James Ryan had fouled Wallabies forward Rob Valetini by peeling from the maul and preventing a tackle. This decision kept the score level temporarily.
Australia’s lineout proved a strong point, winning 11 of 12 throws, while Ireland’s lineout was turned over three times. Playmaker Carter Gordon was influential in attack for the Wallabies, supported by standout performances from forwards and backs, including Joseph-Aukuso Suaalii, Len Likutau, and returning fullback Jock Campbell, who was playing his first Test in nearly six weeks.
The game began with a fast pace, with winger Dylan Pitecsh scoring for Australia in the third minute. Ireland responded through backrower Cian Prendergast, who crossed after an attacking lineout from a penalty instead of opting for a goal kick. This was followed by a try from Campbell, set up by a long break from Gordon, before Ireland’s Josh van der Flier scored off a no-look pass from Sheehan in the 16th minute.
Australia extended their lead with tries from Josh Canham and halfback Ryan Lonergan before halftime. After the break, Ireland’s fullback Hugo Keenan touched down following a precise pass from Garry Ringrose, giving them a temporary lead. Ireland’s replacement prop Thomas Clarkson scored late in the 77th minute, coming after Wallabies lock Lachie Shaw was sin-binned for repeated infringements.
With the match on the line, Wallabies flyhalf Ben Donaldson missed a penalty attempt from 39 meters out on the sideline after the final siren, denying Australia the chance to snatch victory. This marked Donaldson’s only penalty attempt of the game, as both teams focused on try-scoring rather than goal-kicking opportunities.
The victory maintains Ireland’s dominance over Australia since 2018, while the Wallabies showcased several encouraging elements despite the narrow loss as they prepare for the remainder of the Nations Championship.
