Brisbane Broncos hooker Billy Walters made a notable return to rugby league action over the weekend, appearing for the Souths Logan Magpies in the Queensland Cup after nearly 300 days sidelined by a ruptured anterior cruciate ligament (ACL). Walters, who was ruled out of last year’s grand final due to the injury, played 60 minutes in his first full-contact game in some time, contributing significantly to his team’s six-point victory over the North Devils.
During the match, Walters crossed for a try, set up a line-break, ran for 77 metres, and made 18 tackles, showcasing an all-around strong performance in the halves. Speaking after the game, he remarked that his knee was feeling positive despite the physical demands of the return, noting it was his first 60-minute full-contact stint in a long period and that some soreness was to be expected.
Walters’ return comes at a crucial time for the Broncos, who are currently managing several injuries among their key players. Additionally, the absence of star players Patrick Carrigan, Payne Haas, and Reece Walsh—who are unavailable due to State of Origin commitments—has created an opportunity for Walters to re-enter the National Rugby League (NRL) squad.
Walters indicated he was ready to step up if required, saying he would discuss options with Broncos coach Kevin Walters (known as "Madge") and was willing to return to the top level if called upon. However, he also expressed openness to continuing to build match fitness and performance in the reserve grade if that was deemed the better approach, emphasizing a week-by-week strategy for his progression.
The Broncos will monitor Walters’ recovery and performance closely as they navigate player availability in the coming rounds, with Walters poised as a potential reinforcement to their lineup amid a challenging period for the squad.
