HBO’s new legal drama “War,” which premiered on October 1 and streams on Max, explores the high-stakes fallout of a messy celebrity divorce amid intense media scrutiny. The series stars Sienna Miller as Carla Duval, a prominent actress whose separation from her tech billionaire husband, Morgan Henderson, played by Dominic West, unfolds against the backdrop of a glamorous movie premiere and relentless tabloid attention.

Though the show’s premise and characters resonate with the realities faced by public figures, both Miller and West stress that the story is entirely fictional and not drawn from their personal lives. Miller, 44, noted in an interview that while some situations in the series felt familiar, portraying them through a fictional character was a liberating experience. “I don’t feel necessarily that I need to spend more time exploring press intrusion and paparazzi,” she said, reflecting on her own past exposure to intense media attention, notably during her high-profile relationship with actor Jude Law in the 2000s.

West, 56, echoed a similar sentiment, observing that playing Morgan—a character further removed from his own persona—allowed him to experience public scrutiny from a different perspective. He described the enjoyment of witnessing the media invasion through the eyes of a billionaire businessman as a form of schadenfreude, or taking pleasure in another’s misfortune. West drew on his prior experience with media attention during his career, including his role as Prince Charles in “The Crown.”

The series was created by executive producer George Kay, known for his work on “Lupin” and “Hijack.” Kay emphasized that the characters and plotlines are fictional, though the show incorporates widely recognized elements of celebrity culture, such as public legal battles and media ambushes. The dramatic red-carpet scene in which Carla is served divorce papers was inspired in part by real-life incidents such as Olivia Wilde receiving custody papers publicly during a 2022 event, though Kay clarified that the scene is a nod to such moments rather than a direct retelling.

In addition to the lead actors, “War” features strong supporting roles on both sides of the legal battle, including Phoebe Fox and James McArdle representing Carla’s team and Pip Torrens and Nina Sosanya on Morgan’s side. HBO has already renewed the series for a second season, which will shift focus to a new defamation case featuring actors Marisa Tomei, Kelly Macdonald, David Harewood, and Richard Schiff.

Miller contributed to the series by influencing her character’s fashion choices, opting for a chic, vintage wardrobe that reflects her own aesthetic preferences. West also shaped his character by advocating for a nuanced portrayal, making Morgan somewhat more likable and warm despite his ruthless business persona. The creators and cast have presented “War” as a stylized exploration of celebrity and legal drama, deliberately distinct from the real lives of those involved.
