HBO’s new legal drama “War” introduces a tense and competitive world of London law firms through its first episode, “It’s Done,” now available on HBO Max. The series centers on the bitter divorce between Martin Henderson’s Dominic West and Carla Duval, played by Sienna Miller, setting a tone of ruthless tactics and deception.
The narrative primarily follows Johnny Warren, portrayed by Archie Renaux, a determined but struggling young lawyer from a modest background trying to secure a position at a prestigious London law firm. Early scenes depict Johnny facing repeated rejection, working in a high-end restaurant where he endures harassment from wealthy clients and humiliation from acquaintances. His tense relationship with his girlfriend Bella, played by Honor Swinton Byrne, adds emotional complexity to his character.
Johnny's initial attempts to break into the legal profession are marked by an unpromising interview with David Schill (Miles Jupp) at Cathcarts & Sons, where he is given a noncommittal response. However, Johnny later claims to have received a job offer and a final interview opportunity with competitor Taylor & Byrne, which raises questions about the offer’s legitimacy. This suspicion dissipates as the episode unfolds, revealing that Johnny’s successful interview and glowing recommendation are part of a larger scheme orchestrated by Schill. Johnny is recruited as a mole at Taylor & Byrne, tasked with relaying confidential information back to Cathcarts & Sons, intensifying the rivalry between the two firms.
Series creator George Kay explained that Johnny’s dual role was a deliberate choice to heighten dramatic tension, noting that the character’s infiltration provides a “craziest” twist to the storyline. Renaux, who was aware of Johnny’s duplicity from the outset, describes the character as complex rather than villainous, motivated by desperation and a desire to prove himself in an elite profession that has largely shut him out.
Kay emphasized that Johnny’s actions stem from his limited opportunities in law rather than malicious intent, highlighting the emotional strain behind his choices. Renaux echoed this view, suggesting Johnny carries a chip on his shoulder and is driven by a need to secure his place among legal elites.
As the season progresses, Johnny’s role as a mole is expected to generate significant conflict, underpinning the cutthroat atmosphere between the competing firms as they navigate the contentious divorce proceedings. The show combines personal drama with professional intrigue, presenting a layered exploration of ambition, loyalty, and deception within London’s high-stakes legal environment.
