A notable increase in sightings of the hummingbird hawk-moth has been reported across the United Kingdom this summer, prompted by unseasonably warm weather and favorable wind patterns. The species, known for its rapid wing beats and resemblance to a small hummingbird, typically migrates from continental Europe and North Africa but appears to be making more frequent appearances in the UK.

Luke Burstow, a software project manager from Sussex, recently encountered one of the moths while having dinner in his garden. Describing the insect as a "grey lump with orange wings," Burstow was struck by its unique appearance and swift movements. After taking several photographs of the moth, he noted how its wings, which flap around 80 times per second, still appeared somewhat blurred despite using a fast camera shutter speed.

Butterfly and moth specialists have called 2026 a potentially “bumper year” for hummingbird hawk-moth sightings. Richard Austin, a recording schemes officer with Butterfly Conservation, reported a significant rise in public inquiries and records of the species this year, though he advised caution in directly comparing current numbers with those from previous years. The insects have been seen throughout the UK, including as far north as Scotland and Northern Ireland.

Experts attribute the influx to warm southerly winds accompanying recent heatwaves, which may have facilitated the moths’ journey northward. Richard Harrington, an honorary fellow at the Royal Entomological Society, suggested that drought conditions in traditional Mediterranean breeding grounds might also be driving the moths to seek alternative habitats. Meanwhile, prolonged sunny weather in the UK has encouraged more outdoor activity, increasing the likelihood of people spotting and reporting these insects, according to Ray Barnett of the British Entomological and Natural History Society.

Barnett further noted that if milder winters persist due to climate change, the hummingbird hawk-moth may establish a foothold as a resident species rather than remaining solely migratory. Some adults that survive the British winter could potentially breed within the UK more consistently. The larvae feed on common wildflowers such as lady’s bedstraw and hedge bedstraw, which are widespread in the country, potentially aiding their establishment.

“If these weather patterns continue, then [the moth] is going to survive winters regularly,” Barnett said, highlighting the species’ shifting status within the UK’s insect population.
