Billionaires Warren Buffett and Bill Gates have reflected publicly on their decades-long friendship and joint philanthropic efforts, emphasizing that recent changes in their giving arrangements do not reflect any personal estrangement.
Buffett, the legendary investor and former CEO of Berkshire Hathaway, addressed questions about stepping back from his role as a trustee of the Bill & Melinda French Gates Foundation, clarifying that his decision was not driven by any deterioration in his relationship with Gates. The two men have maintained a close bond since their first meeting in July 1991, when Gates’s mother invited Buffett to the family’s vacation home on Hood Canal in Washington state. Gates later called it "a deep friendship from our very first conversation."
Over the years, Buffett and Gates collaborated on numerous philanthropic initiatives, most notably co-founding the Giving Pledge in June 2010 alongside Melinda French Gates. The campaign encourages the world’s wealthiest individuals to commit the majority of their fortunes to charitable causes. Buffett confirmed in 2006 that he would make annual contributions of Berkshire Hathaway stock to the Gates Foundation, also serving as one of its trustees for several years.
The partnership extended beyond philanthropy into moments of personal camaraderie. In April 2019, the two men appeared together at an Omaha Dairy Queen, taking turns at the cash register and engaging with customers. Their shared history includes Gates joining the Berkshire board of directors in December 2004, and Buffett’s glowing remarks on Gates’s leadership when he stepped down as Berkshire CEO in May 2025.
Despite the public fallout from the divorce of Bill and Melinda French Gates announced in May 2021, Buffett has consistently stressed the strength of his connection with the Gates family. Following the divorce, Buffett announced in June 2021 his decision to step down as a trustee of the Gates Foundation, though he did not link this to any personal discord.
Most recently, in June 2026, Gates informed lawmakers that his last conversation with Buffett took place earlier that year in January, prior to the full disclosure of the Epstein files. Throughout their nearly 35-year friendship, Gates has publicly praised Buffett’s wisdom and leadership, at times describing him as a father figure and a peer.
Together, Buffett and Gates have become influential figures in global philanthropy, using their resources and public profiles to encourage wealth redistribution and social responsibility among the world’s billionaires. Their relationship appears to remain intact, rooted in shared values and mutual respect despite evolving roles and external developments.
