The United States has initiated a 6G alliance with more than 20 countries across Europe and Asia, aiming to coordinate strategies and accelerate the development and deployment of sixth-generation mobile network technology. The coalition, which includes the United Kingdom, Germany, and Japan among its 24 members, seeks to establish a shared framework for technology development, resource sharing, and commercial rollout anticipated to begin in the 2030s.

The National Telecommunications and Information Administration (NTIA), part of the U.S. Department of Commerce, emphasized that the initiative intends to secure American leadership in what is expected to be a transformative evolution of global communications infrastructure. Unlike prior generations focused primarily on improved connectivity speeds, 6G networks are projected to integrate artificial intelligence, advanced sensing, and computing capabilities, supporting applications such as autonomous systems and humanoid robotics.

Experts note the alliance is part of a broader U.S. effort to counter China’s growing influence in telecommunications technology. Shan Guangcun, a professor at the University of Chinese Academy of Sciences specializing in AI and robotics, described the U.S. strategy as an attempt to build an alternative ecosystem across technology, standards, industry, and geopolitics that limits China’s role. The alliance aims to shape next-generation technology standards and establish a “trusted” supply chain to reduce reliance on Chinese firms like Huawei Technologies and ZTE, which have dominated previous generations but faced U.S. restrictions due to national security concerns.

Despite these efforts, analysts suggest short-term challenges may hinder the alliance’s effectiveness. China maintains advantages as the world’s largest telecom market with extensive real-world applications and users and has advanced early 6G trials. Shan pointed to China’s portfolio of over 300 key 6G technologies, contrasted with a still-developing U.S. roadmap. He noted that ultimate leadership in 6G standards and technologies will depend heavily on market adoption and commercial implementation.

Alicia Garcia-Herrero, chief economist for Asia-Pacific and the Middle East at Natixis, highlighted that the alliance not only aims to reduce reliance on Chinese technology but also to present a united front ahead of critical international negotiations, such as the World Radiocommunication Conferences (WRC) scheduled for late next year in Shanghai. These conferences are key to setting international rules on radio frequencies and satellite orbits. She emphasized that the alliance’s success will depend less on its formation and more on whether members commit to specific spectrum policies, industrial strategies, research and development investment, and private-sector collaboration.

The U.S. pursuit of 6G innovation has been ongoing through both terms of former President Donald Trump. In 2019, Trump expressed urgency for advancing 5G and 6G technologies in the United States. The current administration has described 6G networks as fundamental to national security, foreign policy, and economic prosperity. China, meanwhile, has included 6G among its top six strategic future technologies in its most recent five-year plan and leads globally in 6G-related patent applications, accounting for over 40 percent at the end of last year. The U.S. follows with around 35 percent of such patents.

Chinese companies Huawei and ZTE have been central to China’s 5G success and are heavily engaged in early 6G research. Both companies have been subject to U.S. export controls and restrictions since 2018, including Huawei’s addition to the U.S. Entity List and limitations on access to American technology, reflecting ongoing geopolitical tensions in the telecommunications sector.
