The Washington Commanders suffered a 30-13 defeat to the Indianapolis Colts on Sunday in London, highlighting significant challenges with injuries and inconsistent offensive performance. The loss dropped Washington to 1-3 on the season, with quarterback availability emerging as a critical concern.

Starting quarterback Jayden Daniels remained sidelined due to a dislocated left elbow sustained earlier in the season. Although he returned to practice on Wednesday, he was ruled out on Friday, prompting backup Marcus Mariota to start his second consecutive game. Mariota’s outing was cut short midway through the first quarter after he suffered a right knee injury while being sacked, forcing rookie Athan Kaliakmanis into action for his NFL debut.

Kaliakmanis struggled to manage the offense, with the Commanders producing only three first downs in his first five drives. Washington initially took a 6-0 lead through early field goals but quickly fell behind as the Colts capitalized on mistakes and pressure. Despite some deep passing plays, Kaliakmanis’s inexperience was evident, and the offense was unable to sustain momentum.

Wide receiver Treylon Burks provided a highlight with a 47-yard touchdown catch in the third quarter, narrowing the Colts’ lead to 17-13. However, the Commanders’ offense failed to convert enough opportunities to mount a full comeback. Multiple penalties and miscommunications further hampered their efforts.

On the defensive side, Washington showed some early promise, including a fumble recovery deep in Colts territory, but the offense repeatedly faltered in key situations. The offensive line faced difficulties without starters Sam Cosmi, sidelined by a concussion, and LaRemy Tunsil, out with a torn triceps. Despite personnel adjustments by coach Dan Quinn, the line struggled with run blocking and pass protection throughout the game.

Wide receiver Terry McLaurin was also inactive due to a hamstring injury, depriving the team of a key offensive weapon. Following the game, Quinn expressed confidence in the defense’s progress but acknowledged the offense’s shortcomings under challenging circumstances.

Looking ahead, Daniels is expected to resume full practice participation this week and is likely to reclaim the starting quarterback role. The Commanders will host the New York Giants next Sunday, aiming to reverse their fortunes after a difficult trip to London.
