Kiki Iriafen scored 23 points and grabbed 12 rebounds to lead the Washington Mystics to a 90-82 victory over the Golden State Valkyries on Tuesday night in San Francisco, ending Golden State’s nine-game winning streak. Shakira Austin contributed a double-double with 15 points and 15 rebounds as Washington rallied from a seven-point deficit in the final minutes to secure the win.

The Mystics trailed 80-73 with just over three minutes remaining before closing the game on a decisive 17-2 run. Iriafen’s short jumper with 1:41 left pushed Washington ahead 82-80. Kaitlyn Chen led the Valkyries with 20 points and six assists, hitting a three-pointer midway through the fourth quarter and later assisting Kiah Stokes on a three-point shot. However, Golden State was unable to capitalize on late opportunities.

Veronica Burton added 12 points and seven assists for Washington, while Kayla Thornton scored 15 points for Golden State. The loss marked only the third defeat for the Valkyries in their last 16 games. Sonia Citron contributed 15 points and six assists for the Mystics, who had lost 74-69 to Golden State just two nights prior.

Tuesday’s contest was a physical matchup that included a controversial play involving Washington rookie Cotie McMahon. With 1:16 remaining in the third quarter, McMahon committed a hard foul against Golden State’s Janelle Salaun, which was reviewed and resulted in a technical foul after McMahon was deemed to have landed on Salaun’s hair with her foot.

The game took place at Chase Center, where Golden State’s fans showed early enthusiasm by lining up more than four hours before tipoff to receive a Hello Kitty plush giveaway for the first 10,000 attendees. Merchandise related to the promotion, including Hello Kitty key chains, quickly sold out.

Iriafen shot efficiently, making 8 of 12 attempts overall and 5 for 7 in the first half, helping Washington to a 36-35 lead at halftime. The Mystics, who shot 51.9 percent in the first half, will host the Las Vegas Aces on Wednesday before the All-Star break. The Valkyries will not return to action until after the break, when they face the Phoenix Mercury on July 29.
