Watertown secured a 15-7 victory over Melrose in a Middlesex League matchup Friday night at Victory Field, improving to 6-0 for the first time since 2016. The win was driven by a strong team effort, highlighted by standout plays from sophomore Maximus Velazquez.

Melrose took an early lead when sophomore tight end Conor Barrington caught a 34-yard touchdown pass from senior quarterback Nate Geer. Watertown evened the score late in the first half with a 9-yard touchdown reception by junior wide receiver Mason Lamacchia, connecting with senior quarterback Coleman Keuchkarian-Mckeen.

As rain intensified and the field became slick, both teams shifted to a ground-focused strategy. Velazquez capitalized on the conditions, breaking free for a 71-yard touchdown run that proved decisive. Later in the fourth quarter, Velazquez intercepted a pass inside the red zone, halting a potential Melrose scoring drive and preserving Watertown’s lead.

Watertown coach Joey Carroll emphasized the team’s collective mindset as a key factor in their undefeated start. “We over Me” has become a central mantra in the locker room, contributing to the Raiders’ cohesion and success in what Carroll described as a challenging Middlesex League schedule.

With their latest win, Watertown continues to navigate a competitive gauntlet, maintaining momentum in a league known for strong programs. Melrose falls to 4-2 as they face the remainder of the season. Reporters Jake Seymour and Tyler Amaral contributed to this story.
