Newcastle United have secured the signing of defender Abdulmalik Bamgbola from Watford as part of their ongoing efforts to strengthen their academy. The 15-year-old left-sided centre-back spent the previous three seasons with Watford before joining Newcastle’s youth system, where he will be integrated into the Under-16 squad.
The move aligns with academy director Steve Harper’s strategy of recruiting promising young players from rival clubs to bolster Newcastle’s development ranks. Since assuming his role in 2021, Harper has actively sought to enhance the club’s youth setup, which he acknowledges is still building its stature in comparison to other Premier League academies.
Alongside Bamgbola, Newcastle’s recent recruits include Kyran Thompson, a 17-year-old defender who moved from Arsenal during the summer, and Michael Mills, brought in from Port Vale. These additions complement an already strong Under-18 group featuring Mason Miley—brother of first-team player Lewis Miley—Vakhatang Salia, and other emerging talents. This cohort has shown promise, with Mills making the bench for a recent first-team match against Hull City.
Newcastle’s academy currently ranks second in the Premier League Under-18 (North Division) standings, reflecting progress at this level. However, the club’s Under-21 squad occupies 31st place in the Premier League 2 table, illustrating challenges at the higher youth tiers. Most recently, the Under-21s were narrowly defeated 2-1 by Solihull Moors in the National League Cup and are scheduled to face Luton Town at Whitley Park.
With the integration of Bamgbola and other summer signings such as Christian Boothe and Kyle Healy-Matthews, Newcastle continues to invest in cultivating talent that can contribute to the club’s long-term future on and off the pitch.
