Matthew Bird, a Wayland High School graduate and Harvard University alum, has been named the new executive director of Boston Ballet, the organization announced Wednesday. Bird will assume the position in January, succeeding Ming Min Hui, who will step down at the end of the year.

Bird brings extensive experience in the performing arts sector, currently serving as chief development officer at The Metropolitan Opera. His background also includes a significant tenure at New York City Ballet, where he developed a strong commitment to ballet and its creative community.

Raised in the Boston area, Bird has long-standing ties to the local arts scene through both his family and personal involvement. He grew up attending Boston Ballet performances and concerts of the Boston Symphony Orchestra. During high school, he played percussion in a program at the New England Conservatory and later studied music and biology at Harvard.

Expressing enthusiasm for his new role, Bird emphasized his dedication to blending artistic passion with strategic business approaches to ensure the vitality and growth of the ballet company. He highlighted plans to expand the ballet’s audience and deepen community engagement, stressing the importance of fostering strong connections with patrons to encourage repeated attendance.

Bird aims to build upon Boston Ballet’s existing achievements while supporting the company’s artistic talent, positioning it for a new phase of growth and innovation. Beyond his professional aspirations, Bird noted his excitement about returning to Boston’s cultural environment, including enjoying runs along the Charles River and the city’s sports atmosphere.

He is expected to begin his tenure in January, marking a return to his hometown and a continued commitment to advancing the region’s arts landscape.
