A Flydubai flight bound for Israel experienced a violent attack near the cockpit that led to a sharp descent, with Israeli passengers playing a crucial role in restraining the assailant and helping pilots regain control of the aircraft. The incident took place recently, with eyewitness accounts emerging a day later from passengers who were aboard the flight.
Tal, an Israeli businessman living abroad who was on the plane, provided a detailed firsthand reconstruction of the events. According to Tal, the altercation occurred within close proximity to the cockpit, where a man armed with a weapon struggled with the flight officers, who were simultaneously trying to fly the plane. The pilots were reportedly fighting for survival, with one man seen on video with blood on his shirt, later identified as one of the injured pilots.
Amid the chaos, a number of Israeli passengers quickly moved toward the cockpit to physically subdue the attacker and assist the flight crew. Tal emphasized that their intervention was vital to securing the aircraft and preventing what could have been a catastrophic outcome. He described the scene as marked by a breakdown of typical hierarchies: pilots were among passengers, a dentist tended to wounded crew members, and those onboard improvised roles to maintain control and safety.
Tal also conveyed the urgency and split-second decision-making that characterized the response. He recounted hearing someone call out to ensure seasoned Israelis were positioned at key points around the plane. “We should have only Israelis in key points,” he said, underscoring the instinctive coordination among passengers. He stressed that this strategy was not pre-planned but developed spontaneously during the emergency.
Contrary to some earlier reports, Tal denied that the attacker shouted “Allahu akbar” during the incident, stating that no one aboard heard such words amid the rapid escalation. He recalled a poignant moment involving a young girl crying out as her father fought near the cockpit, highlighting the human element amid the crisis.
By the time the plane landed safely, the attacker was restrained and injured individuals were receiving treatment. Tal described the aftermath as suspended between shock and the cautious realization that the immediate threat had passed. Reviewing footage of the incident after the fact, he focused on identifying passengers’ locations and movements to piece together the sequence of events.
The Flydubai incident underlines the unpredictable nature of in-flight emergencies and the critical impact that quick-thinking passengers can have in such scenarios. The coordinated response by Israelis onboard, combined with the efforts of the flight crew, played a key role in averting a much more severe disaster.
