Sheffield Wednesday has dismissed manager Henrik Pedersen following a 2-0 defeat to Doncaster Rovers that marked the club’s second consecutive loss. The decision came 24 hours after fans at the away match vocally called for Pedersen’s departure as the team slipped to eighth place in League One.

Pedersen, 48, who took over in July 2025, expressed disappointment but accepted the situation, stating after the Doncaster game that while he heard the chants against him, his focus remained on doing the best for the club. He acknowledged frustration over securing no points in two matches.

The club’s sporting director, Simon Wilson, thanked Pedersen for his professionalism and contribution during a challenging period for Sheffield Wednesday. Wilson noted that the season had begun with significant structural changes, and although initial expectations included developing a consistent style of play and improved performances, the progress had not met the club’s standards. He added that the decision to make a change was aimed at establishing a solid foundation for sustained improvement throughout the remainder of the season and beyond.

Following Pedersen’s departure, midfielder Matt Hamshaw has been named interim manager as the club searches for a permanent head coach.

Pedersen assumed control after the team’s relegation from the Championship in the previous season, a campaign overshadowed by an 18-point deduction linked to the club’s entry into administration after the exit of former owner Dejphon Chansiri. Under new ownership, the club undertook a significant squad overhaul over the summer, emphasizing experienced players to target a swift return to the Championship.

The team began the current League One campaign strongly under Pedersen, securing victories in four of their first five games. However, fan dissatisfaction grew as results worsened, with criticism directed at player performances and managerial team selections amid a perceived lack of on-pitch effort. Heading into their upcoming home match against Cambridge United, Sheffield Wednesday sit two points shy of the playoff spots and seven points behind the league leaders.
