A recent study highlights the impact of inconsistent sleep patterns on teenagers, linking what is known as “social jet lag” to increased anxiety levels among youths. The phenomenon arises when adolescents adjust their sleep schedules on weekends—staying up late and sleeping in—then return to earlier wake times on weekdays for school, creating a disruption akin to experiencing jet lag.

The research, conducted by Southampton University and published in the journal Sleep Medicine Reviews, reviewed 12 studies encompassing more than 235,000 individuals aged between 12 and 18, along with six additional studies for context. The analysis found a significant association between greater discrepancies in sleep timing and higher anxiety levels in teenagers.

Dr. Sarah Chellappa, a researcher involved in the study, explained that during puberty, the natural internal clock tends to shift later, making teenagers biologically inclined to fall asleep and wake up later. However, early school start times often require them to wake up before their bodies are ready, leading to chronic sleep deprivation during the week. This sleep debt is then compounded by attempts to catch up on rest over the weekend, creating a cycle of irregular sleep patterns.

“Many lie in on weekends, but this mismatch between weekday and weekend sleep can worsen social jet lag,” Dr. Chellappa noted. The study suggests that such disruptions may not only affect sleep quality but could also contribute to elevated anxiety in adolescents.

The findings underscore the potential benefits of maintaining more consistent sleep schedules, even on weekends, to help mitigate these effects. Researchers also point to the possibility of schools reconsidering start times to better align with teenagers’ natural sleep rhythms, which could improve their overall mental health and well-being.

As anxiety and mental health concerns continue to rise among young people, this research adds to the growing evidence emphasizing the importance of sleep hygiene and schedule regularity in adolescent development.
