Kuala Lumpur-based artist-illustrator Lim Heng Swee is currently showcasing his second solo exhibition, Catopia, at the PapanHaus gallery in Petaling Jaya, Selangor. The exhibition, which runs until September 20, features 30 of Lim’s hand-painted works, predominantly derived from his earlier digital illustrations of cats, alongside a preview of his latest wordless picture book, *Le Voyage*, published this month in France by Grasset.
Despite never having owned a pet cat, Lim has spent the last eight years exploring feline subjects through his art. His series Cat Landscape and Cat And Plant depict cats in whimsical, fantastical settings—perched behind houseplants, surfing giant waves, or stretching across surreal horizons—capturing the playful and enigmatic traits that have resonated with an audience worldwide. Lim describes cats as creatively inspiring, each with distinct personalities that fuel his minimalist and vividly colored visual style.
Originally trained as a mechanical engineer, Lim shifted careers early on after recognizing his passion for illustration. Over more than two decades, he has built a self-taught career as a freelance artist, gaining international recognition through platforms such as the US-based Threadless, where he won Designer of the Year in 2009 and 2011 under the pseudonym “ilovedoodle.” His early work was primarily digital and available as prints or merchandise, but responding to fan encouragement, Lim transitioned to painting on canvas for Catopia, deliberately slowing his artistic process amid the pressures of keeping pace with trends and technological changes in illustration, including the rise of artificial intelligence.
At the exhibition, Lim engages directly with visitors through talks and sharing sessions, providing insight into his creative process. The hand-painted pieces are not exact copies of his original digital work; variations in detail make each painting unique, embodying Lim’s desire to enjoy the act of creation free from commercial and technological constraints.
Alongside the cat-themed works, Catopia presents *Le Voyage*, a silent narrative book illustrating the emotional journey of a young boy coping with loss. This thematic exploration connects with motifs recurring throughout Lim’s portfolio, linking his various projects in a broader personal narrative.
Lim reflects on the balance between ambition and contentment, referencing the parable of the fisherman and the businessman to emphasize his focus on living a meaningful life through art, rather than chasing commercial success. He hopes his body of work will leave a lasting impression, emphasizing the finite nature of human life and the value of pursuing one’s passions.
Catopia is open Wednesday through Friday from noon to 5 p.m., and Saturday to Sunday from 11 a.m. to 8 p.m., with an entrance fee of RM20. The exhibition is housed in an old Petaling Jaya residence converted into an arts space that complements the intimate and approachable spirit of the show.
