Welling United secured a 4-2 victory over Burgess Hill Town at home, reclaiming second place in the Isthmian League Premier Division on Saturday.
The first goal came just before the half-hour mark after a long throw-in that the visitors failed to clear. The ball fell to Fumnaya Shomotun, who quickly turned and fired a shot inside the near post to give Welling the lead. Both Chris Harris of Welling and Burgess Hill’s Chris Whelpdale had earlier missed chances with headers.
As the first half neared its end, Burgess Hill’s keeper, Roco Rees, made a notable save to deny Harris, but the scoring intensifies after the break. On the hour, Shomotun once again found space, beating two defenders down the right flank before cutting inside and striking a powerful shot off the far post for Welling’s second goal.
Burgess Hill responded shortly after, with Hamish Morrison credited with pulling one back. However, there was some controversy as the final deflection appeared to come off a Welling defender. Welling quickly reasserted control when Lekan Majoyegbe headed home a Jamie Reynolds free kick to restore the hosts’ two-goal cushion.
Shomotun continued to influence the game by setting up Nahum Melvin-Lambert, who calmly finished to make it 4-1 for Welling.
Despite the deficit, Burgess Hill pressed on and earned a late penalty in the 88th minute after substitute Charlie Lambert was fouled by Welling goalkeeper Philip Ogayi inside the area. George Vorster converted the spot-kick, reducing the margin to two, but the visitors could not find an equalizer.
The victory keeps Welling United firmly in contention near the top of the Isthmian League Premier Division standings as the season progresses.
