A wellness coach in Leicester has died following the use of Kambo, a substance derived from the skin secretions of an Amazonian giant leaf frog, traditionally used in South American purging and fertility rituals. Kristian Trend, 40, was found unwell in a flat on April 11 and later died in hospital. Authorities have been investigating the circumstances of his death, although the official cause has not yet been confirmed pending toxicology results.

Kambo, also known as Sapo, is a natural extract from the dried secretions of the frog’s skin. It has gained popularity in parts of Europe as a wellness tool, with some users seeking cleansing or transformative experiences. Despite being banned in several countries including Australia and Chile, Kambo remains legal to purchase and use within Britain; however, it is not licensed as a medicine.

Following the incident, Leicestershire Police arrested a 41-year-old man on suspicion of administering poison, and he has been released on bail. The police continue to investigate the case.

Trend’s mother, Angie, revealed that her son had previously battled Burkitt lymphoma cancer in his twenties, spending months in hospital before recovering. She described him as a spiritual person who took various vitamins and was intending to “cleanse” himself. She expressed uncertainty over the cause of his death and said she was awaiting test results, though she also voiced hope that the substance would be banned.

Family members have created a tribute page on social media in Mr. Trend’s memory, with messages highlighting his impact on loved ones and their sorrow over his untimely passing.

A government spokesperson stated that substances posing risks to public health or safety are kept under review, suggesting potential regulatory scrutiny of Kambo may follow. Its increasing use as a wellbeing therapy has prompted concerns among some health officials and members of the public.

As investigations continue, officials emphasize that the official cause of Mr. Trend’s death remains unconfirmed, and authorities are assessing all factors related to Kambo’s role in the incident.
