The Mississippi State Medical Examiner’s Office determined Wells’ cause and manner of death to be undetermined. This finding aligns with the independent autopsy conducted by a pathologist retained by Wells’ family.

District Attorney Angel Myers McIlrath stated that the investigation uncovered no indications that Wells’ death was racially motivated. The case had attracted significant public attention, prompting thorough examination by law enforcement and medical authorities.
