A recent survey has revealed that nearly 40% of individuals expecting to receive an inheritance from their parents rely on it to support their own financial situation. However, 60% of those anticipating an inheritance are uncertain about the amount they may receive. The findings raise concerns that many households could be making key financial decisions based on unclear or overly optimistic assumptions.
The research, conducted by insurance company Aviva, highlights potential risks for people who may depend on inheritances to cover everyday expenses, pay off debts, or fund retirement plans. Without clear knowledge of the expected sum, individuals may face financial difficulties if those expectations are not met.
The survey also found that only 32% of respondents have a current will and know its location, underscoring a broader issue of inadequate estate planning. Lorna Whalley, of Aviva, emphasized the importance of clarity, stating that understanding one's financial position and future requirements is essential for fostering open discussions about inheritance and managing expectations effectively.
These findings suggest a need for both clear communication within families and greater financial preparedness to avoid potential instability arising from uncertain inheritance prospects.
