Ludek Miklosko, the former West Ham United goalkeeper and coach, has died at the age of 64 after a prolonged battle with cancer. The Czech footballer, who was diagnosed in 2021, announced in late 2024 that he would withdraw from further treatment. His family confirmed his passing earlier this week.

Miklosko is remembered as a key figure in West Ham’s history, having made nearly 400 appearances for the club between 1990 and 1998. He played an instrumental role in helping the team secure promotion to the English top flight twice, in 1991 and 1993. Renowned for his reliability and skill, Miklosko kept 126 clean sheets during his eight-year spell with the Hammers. Supporters have long celebrated his contributions, often singing his name at matches even after his departure. The goalkeeper later returned to West Ham as a goalkeeping coach, further cementing his lasting connection with the club.

West Ham publicly paid tribute to Miklosko following his death, describing him as a “beloved, inspirational goalkeeper and gentle giant of a man.” The club observed a moment of silence before training this week and plans to honour him before their Carabao Cup third-round match against Fulham. Additional commemorations are scheduled for a Championship fixture against Queens Park Rangers next month, where Miklosko spent the final three years of his playing career.

Internationally, Miklosko earned 42 caps and represented Czechoslovakia at the 1990 World Cup. His impact extended beyond club football, as he remained respected throughout the wider football community.

In a statement, Miklosko’s son Martin expressed profound gratitude for the support his father received from fans, teammates, and the football community during his illness. He said the messages and encouragement provided a great source of comfort and strength throughout his father's fight with cancer. “Dad simply loved West Ham, and especially hearing his name sung loud and proud at every game. The club, and its fans, were and always will be a part of our family,” Martin added.

Friday, October 9, will be dedicated to Miklosko’s memory by West Ham, offering the club and its supporters an opportunity to honour the legacy of a player and coach who left a lasting mark on English football.
