In January 2019, Jack Graham, then a 24-year-old second lieutenant in the U.S. Army, approached Kristian Tran at a Washington, D.C., networking event after months of quietly admiring her work. The two first crossed paths the previous fall when Kristian, a software engineer with the U.S. Department of Defense Digital Service, spoke at a tech employment panel aimed at recruiting military software developers. Although Jack was stationed at Fort Gordon near Augusta, Georgia, and hesitant to approach her initially, he applied for a military fellowship that brought him to Washington, creating an opportunity to connect.
At a Players Club after-work event, Jack disclosed that he had pursued the fellowship partly because of Kristian. The two quickly bonded during a conversation that lasted several hours, exchanging contact information before continuing their relationship long distance. Kristian lived and worked inside the Pentagon, focusing on counter-drone technologies, while Jack was assigned to a biometrics project and based in Georgia. Despite limited time for socializing and distinct professional roles, they sustained their connection.
Their first date took place in March 2019 during a weekend visit Jack made to Washington. The couple attended an electronic dance music concert by the waterfront, followed by brunch at Le Diplomate and a walk through the National Gallery of Art. Over time, Jack’s visits became more frequent. Kristian, a Wellesley College graduate raised in a Catholic family in South Boston, described feeling that their union aligned with her beliefs.
In the spring of 2019, Jack secured a transfer to Fort Meade, Maryland, allowing closer proximity as Kristian began her MBA studies at Harvard Business School. During this period, Jack completed captain’s course training while Kristian navigated the demands of an elite academic environment. Jack provided support through the challenges of graduate school, drawing on his own experiences as the grandson of West Point graduates and an active-duty officer.
Travel played a significant role in their relationship, including trips to Jack’s family Thanksgiving in Vermont, London, and the Amalfi Coast, where they marked Kristian’s mother’s 60th birthday. After Kristian’s graduation in 2021, the couple settled in Washington’s Navy Yard neighborhood and continued to advance their careers. Kristian now leads AI product development at a management consulting firm, while Jack serves as a cyber-operations officer specializing in AI engineering at the Pentagon.
Outside work, they shared activities like grilling on their rooftop deck and running together, including training for the Marine Corps’ 50th anniversary marathon. Their shared experiences culminated in a proposal in early 2025 during a winter trip to Breckenridge, Colorado, when Jack proposed amid twinkling lights outside a restaurant.
The couple planned a July 3, 2026, wedding near Newport, Rhode Island, at Newport Vineyards, a location tied to Jack’s childhood family memories. The ceremony reflected their shared patriotism and heritage, featuring traditional Vietnamese attire worn by Kristian’s mother, red, white, and blue decorations, and personalized vows highlighting mutual respect and support. Looking ahead, the couple expressed hopes for continuing a family tradition of military service, noting the significance of Jack’s lineage as a third-generation West Point graduate. Kristian acknowledged the possibility of future generations embracing the same path, underscoring a lasting commitment to both family and national service.
