A 32-year-old woman was taken into custody after abandoning her newborn infant in a grocery store bathroom in White Plains, New York, on Sunday. Officials responded to a call at the ShopRite located in the City Center shopping complex, where the infant was found and subsequently transported to White Plains Hospital in stable condition, according to a statement from the White Plains Department of Public Safety.
Authorities described the situation as "heart-wrenching" and expressed concern for the child’s well-being as recovery efforts continue. The White Plains police were assisted in the search for the woman by Westchester County Police K9 units and officers from the nearby Harrison Police Department.
The mother, who works at the grocery store and resides in White Plains, faces pending charges related to the incident. Law enforcement officials have not disclosed the infant’s gender. The investigation remains ongoing as authorities seek to understand the circumstances that led to the newborn being left at the store.
