Rain has returned to parts of southern England, bringing an end to dry spells that lasted over two months in some areas. The recent precipitation offers some relief to farmers and gardeners affected by prolonged drought conditions and associated hosepipe bans. However, experts warn that the rainfall is insufficient to alleviate the broader drought affecting large regions of the UK.

Currently, more than 70 percent of England and all of Wales remain classified as being in drought. Nine water companies have imposed hosepipe bans, impacting over 27 million people across England and Wales. Additionally, Severn Trent Water and South Staffordshire Water have urged customers to reduce water usage voluntarily. Despite expected rainfall this week, the areas most in need are unlikely to see enough precipitation to restore normal water levels.

According to the Environment Agency (EA), reservoir storage in England has dropped to 65.9 percent, nearly 14 percentage points below the average for this time of year. Most river levels are below normal, with close to one-third of monitored sites falling into the exceptionally low category.

The effects of extended dry weather on water resources are slow to reverse. Dr. Jonathan Eden, associate professor in climate and environmental change at Coventry University, explained that rivers, reservoirs, and groundwater “respond much more slowly than the weather itself.” He added that several weeks or even months of above-average rainfall would be necessary before water supplies begin to recover substantially.

Last summer’s drought conditions persisted into the winter months, with some hosepipe bans continuing until February this year. Given current circumstances, water companies may still need to impose further restrictions before the onset of winter. While water suppliers decide when to implement hosepipe bans, regulators such as the EA hold the authority to declare droughts. The EA has expressed frustration with some water companies for not introducing bans earlier in the drought period.

Met Office meteorologist Aidan McGivern noted that since April, England and Wales have received approximately 150 millimeters less rainfall than average. The average rainfall for the entire month of September in England is about 68.5 millimeters. McGivern cautioned against oversimplifying the situation by suggesting that a single volume of rainfall could resolve the drought, emphasizing that higher evaporation rates caused by hot weather exacerbate dry conditions. “It’s not going to happen overnight,” he said.

Looking ahead, climate change projections indicate that UK summers will likely become drier while winters grow wetter, a pattern consistent with the current drought and rain cycle. The approaching El Niño event is expected to bring heavier rainfall during the colder months, which may help replenish water supplies. Nonetheless, experts emphasize that recovery from the current drought will require sustained periods of above-average rainfall over the coming months.
