Warming waters in the Arctic are attracting large numbers of baleen whales to the Greenland Sea, leading to intense feeding activity in a region where such events were previously uncommon. Research published recently highlights how rising ocean temperatures and diminishing sea ice have opened new feeding opportunities for these whales along the East Greenland coast.
Scientists from Greenland, Denmark, and Iceland, including Professor Mads Peter Heide-Jørgensen of the Greenland Institute of Natural Resources, found that fin whales, humpback whales, and minke whales have increasingly been observed in coastal East Greenland waters. Historically rare in this area, these species are now engaging in regular "feeding frenzies," drawn by a surge in fish availability.
The study indicates that approximately 4,000 humpback whales, 6,000 fin whales, and 6,000 minke whales visited the Greenland Sea during the summer of 2024. Researchers attribute this influx primarily to the whales’ pursuit of capelin, a small cold-water fish that has shifted its feeding grounds over the past two decades from waters north of Iceland to the Greenland Sea. As the capelin population relocates, the baleen whales appear to have adjusted their migratory patterns accordingly, capitalizing on this newly accessible food source.
The Arctic and North Atlantic regions are experiencing some of the fastest rates of warming globally, accelerating ecological changes that affect species distribution. Heide-Jørgensen noted that this shift is transforming the marine ecosystem, with traditionally ice-associated species like narwhals now sharing habitats with temperate baleen whales that typically avoid ice-covered waters. This redistribution may lead to alterations throughout the food web, affecting both predators and prey in the region.
While many species face challenges due to climate change, this research emphasizes that some marine mammals are benefiting from the modified environment. The expansion of baleen whale presence in East Greenland waters illustrates a complex response to environmental shifts driven by global warming, with potentially far-reaching implications for Arctic marine biodiversity.
