El Niño is a natural climate cycle characterized by warming sea surface temperatures in the central and eastern tropical Pacific Ocean, which in turn influences weather patterns across much of the globe. Indonesia is confronting large-scale wildfires, which scientists link directly to the dry, hot conditions fostered by El Niño. Additionally, satellite observations have revealed an unusually high number of active tropical cyclones—four at present—across the Pacific, from near Japan to Hawaii. Typically, El Niño encourages increased cyclone activity in the central and eastern Pacific, but the current number of systems is remarkable.

In Australia, El Niño events generally bring hotter, drier weather, particularly during the spring and summer months. The Bureau of Meteorology forecasts an extended period of above-average temperatures and reduced rainfall, heightening concerns about bushfire risks. Northern Australian regions have already experienced unseasonably high temperatures approaching 37 degrees Celsius. However, the historical variability of El Niño impacts means that drought-like conditions do not always materialize uniformly across the continent; past episodes have seen both dry conditions and unseasonable rainfall in different areas.

Nearly 50 million people living in fragile communities are projected to experience acute hunger due to the combination of weather extremes, including floods in South America and drought in parts of Africa.
