Kevin, a former rugby league player who won seven Grand Finals with Leeds, is currently facing a personal challenge while preparing for an upcoming significant match on the same ground where he achieved much of his success. Despite the emotional and physical toll, Kevin remains committed to contributing and supporting the effort “while I’m still able.”

The match, which holds special significance due to the location and timing, is something Kevin is cautious about anticipating. He acknowledged the intensity of such occasions, noting that the final day can be emotionally overwhelming and exhausting, even recalling the World Cup final he played in as a reference point. However, his focus remains on managing the challenge ahead rather than looking too far forward.

Kevin is set to participate in the ceremonial delivery of the ball for the match, an event that also involves his son Jack, who is playing in the game. Kevin expressed his delight at Jack’s involvement, saying the situation was unexpected but that he is proud of his son’s role. The two maintain a strong relationship and communicate regularly, but Kevin emphasized that when they are at home, rugby is not a central topic, allowing Jack a respite from the pressures of the sport.

Outside of the match, Kevin has found support in his community, notably through his friendship with former footballer Marcus Stewart, who has also been diagnosed with motor neurone disease (MND) and lives in the same town. Kevin highlighted the importance of Marcus’s openness about his own experience with MND, describing him as an inspirational figure who has helped bring attention to the condition and provide hope for those affected.

Marcus’s wife Louise echoed this sentiment, describing Kevin as a leader within the MND community and emphasizing the significance of his advocacy in the face of a condition that currently lacks a cure or effective treatment. Kevin’s efforts have also attracted support from other sports figures dealing with MND, including former England rugby union player Lewis Moody and Olympic cycling champions Dame Laura and Sir Jason Kenny, who recently joined Kevin in a run.

Kevin credits this wide-ranging support with helping him endure the physical challenges of his condition. Reflecting on the experience, he said the love and solidarity within the MND community are powerful motivators, and that maintaining a positive outlook, including smiling through adversity, is important. He acknowledged the difficulty of the journey but stressed the importance of raising awareness through his efforts.
