Whirlpool Corporation on Monday projected a full-year loss of $1.30 per share, marking a significant revision downward from its January forecast of adjusted earnings of $7 per share. The company attributed the bleak outlook to continued challenges in the housing market and broader economic pressures affecting consumer spending on major appliances.
Shares of Whirlpool declined 8% in after-hours trading following the announcement. The appliance maker reported third-quarter net sales of $3.7 billion, falling short of analysts’ expectations of $3.9 billion and down from $4 billion a year earlier. The company posted an adjusted loss of 21 cents per share for the quarter, compared with analysts’ projected earnings of 73 cents per share.
Whirlpool officials cited persistently high interest rates as a key factor dampening home sales and, in turn, appliance demand. Inflationary pressures and geopolitical uncertainties, including the ongoing conflict involving Iran, have also contributed to consumer hesitancy toward spending on big-ticket items.
Despite these headwinds, Chief Financial Officer Roxanne Warner emphasized that Whirlpool has maintained its market position. The company has continued innovation efforts, introducing approximately 100 new products this year. "For 2026, we have not seen a falloff in share," Warner said, underscoring the firm’s efforts to defend its market presence.
To offset margin pressures, Whirlpool has implemented price increases and cost-reduction strategies. The company has raised prices by an average of 7% entering the fourth quarter and taken steps to streamline operations, including job reductions at its Iowa refrigerator factory in preparation for modernization, the phased closure of a manufacturing plant in Mexico, and the consolidation of distribution centers.
Nevertheless, these measures have been tempered by rising costs for raw materials, fuel, and logistics. The company's ongoing earnings before interest and taxes (EBIT) margin fell to 2.6% in the third quarter, down from 4.5% in the same period last year. Whirlpool indicated that benefits from ongoing cost-cutting initiatives are expected to materialize primarily in 2027.
Overall, Whirlpool’s outlook highlights the ongoing challenges facing manufacturers tied to the housing market amid an uncertain economic backdrop. The company’s commitment to innovation and operational efficiency will be critical as it navigates these headwinds in the coming year.
