Whitbread has confirmed the closure of all Brewers Fayre restaurants across the United Kingdom, with the chain set to cease operations after dinner service on September 7. This move forms part of a broader restructuring effort that will see the company shut around 200 standalone restaurant sites in total.
The Brewers Fayre chain, comprising 89 locations, will close alongside other Whitbread-owned dining brands. Beefeater restaurants—106 sites—are scheduled to close on September 10, while additional brands such as Bar + Block, Table Table, and Cookhouse + Pub will shutter on September 3.
These closures follow an earlier announcement in April, when Whitbread outlined a significant strategic shift aimed at improving profitability and efficiency. The group plans to cut approximately 3,800 jobs across the UK and Ireland as part of this five-year transformation plan, which targets £250 million in cost savings.
Central to the company’s revised strategy is the decision to phase out its individual branded restaurants in favor of integrating food and beverage services within Premier Inn hotels, Whitbread’s core business. The company cited the new hotel-based dining model as both more cost-effective and well-received by guests.
Looking ahead, Whitbread intends to expand its Premier Inn room capacity from the current 86,600 to 96,000 by the 2031 financial year, reinforcing its focus on hotel operations rather than standalone eateries. The group’s recalibration reflects shifting consumer preferences and an evolving hospitality landscape.
