Chicago White Sox rookie first baseman Jacob Gonzalez delivered a walk-off RBI single on Saturday, securing a 2-1 victory over the Kansas City Royals. The game-winning hit marked the first walk-off hit of Gonzalez’s career across high school, college, and professional levels, though he noted he had previously been part of walk-off plays by other means, such as a walk, a fielder’s choice, and a sacrifice fly. He described the latest heroics as “better” than those past experiences.
Gonzalez’s decisive hit contributed to a notable milestone for the White Sox, as he became the fourth rookie on the team this season to record a walk-off RBI. Joining him are Tristan Peters, Sam Antonacci, and Braden Montgomery. The feat marks the first time since 1962 that four rookies on a White Sox roster have each delivered game-ending RBIs within a single season.
Making his major league debut on May 31, Gonzalez has compiled a batting line of .219/.315/.328 with two home runs and 11 RBIs through Sunday’s action. Though primarily a natural shortstop, Gonzalez has been adapting to a new defensive role at first base. Despite some early adjustments on defense, he has played a valuable role in the lineup, particularly in helping offset the temporary absence of Munetaka Murakami, who is sidelined with a hamstring injury.
Gonzalez also showcased his defensive skills on Sunday, making a key catch on a line drive down the right-field line that prevented a potential run for the Royals in the first inning. Reflecting on his experience with the current roster, Gonzalez praised the team’s camaraderie, calling it “such a fun team to play with” as he continues to establish himself in the major leagues.
