The scoring opened with an own goal by Newcastle’s Lewis Miley, following a shot by Leeds’ Ao Tanaka that deflected twice before crossing the line. The setback was compounded within minutes as Leeds doubled their lead when Dominic Calvert-Lewin’s header off a James Justin cross deflected off teammate Jayden Bogle and found the net, crediting Bogle with the goal.

Calvert-Lewin continued to influence the game by scoring his third goal in five home league matches. He powered through the Newcastle defense, bypassing Sven Botman before calmly placing the ball beneath goalkeeper Lukas Hornicek. Leeds’ Noah Okafor later extended the lead, volleying in from the edge of the box after Newcastle failed to clear a long throw, sealing their supremacy before the hour mark.

Newcastle’s night became more difficult early on when Nico Gonzalez was forced off due to concussion, leaving the midfield to 18-year-old Sean Steur and 20-year-old Lewis Miley, who struggled to contain Leeds’ experienced attacking threats. Leeds nearly added a fourth through Anton Stach, who missed narrowly after capitalizing on a loose ball from Hornicek.

The visitors managed a late consolation goal in stoppage time courtesy of Bazoumana Toure, but the damage had been done. Newcastle’s squad, shaped by departures of key players Anthony Gordon, Bruno Guimaraes, and Sandro Tonali in the off-season and operating under the ownership of the Saudi sovereign wealth fund, appeared overmatched by Leeds’ cohesive and energetic performance.

Jaissle acknowledged the challenges facing his side amid the transition period, stating that the difficulties of adapting to a new squad composition were evident. “It was clear from the start and I said that many times that we will have ups and downs, challenges along the way,” he said.

Leeds manager Daniel Farke praised his team’s energy, quality, and structure, highlighting the importance of the victory.
