Andy Burnham, the Labour leader and former mayor of Manchester, does not appear poised to become a contender on the popular dance show Strictly Come Dancing, based on footage from 2024 that resurfaced recently.

In the video, Burnham, then the city’s mayor, takes to the floor during the annual Burrow Strictly Ball in Blackpool, an event held to raise funds for charities supporting motor neurone disease. The ball is named in honor of rugby league player Rob Burrow, who passed away from the disease in 2024 at the age of 41.

During the event, Burnham performed a salsa to Ricky Martin’s “Livin’ La Vida Loca” alongside professional dancer Cara Tighe. Observers described his dance style as somewhat mechanical, reflecting a lack of polish rather than expertise.

The footage gained attention after Burnham appeared on the television program Gogglebox last Friday, where he was seen watching Strictly Come Dancing. Commenting on his own past performance, Burnham acknowledged the difficulty of dancing, noting, “I did this for Rob Burrow. Honestly, never, ever again.”

At 56 years old and a father of three, Burnham’s involvement in the Burrow Strictly Ball highlighted his support for motor neurone disease charities rather than a pursuit of dancing acclaim. The annual event draws participants from various backgrounds to honor Burrow’s legacy while raising awareness and funds for ongoing research and support initiatives related to the disease.

While Burnham’s dance moves may not signal a new career path on the glitterball stage, his participation reflects a commitment to charitable causes connected to his region and community.
