Emergency departments in London experienced a significant surge in influenza-related cases over the past weekend, with patient numbers reaching some of the highest levels seen in recent years. The London Ambulance Service reported its busiest three days of 2025, responding to numerous calls related to respiratory distress caused by illnesses such as the flu.

Health officials attribute the rise in hospital visits to low uptake of the flu vaccine. Less than half of those eligible for the free vaccination in London have received it, a trend that is reflected in other parts of the United Kingdom as well. Eligibility for the free flu jab includes individuals over the age of 65, pregnant women, and those with chronic conditions such as asthma, diabetes, or heart and lung diseases.

Medical experts emphasize that vaccination is crucial not only for individual protection but also for reducing the strain on healthcare services. As emergency departments face increasing pressure from flu cases, maintaining available hospital beds for the most critical patients becomes more challenging.

Authorities are encouraging those who qualify for the free vaccination program to take advantage of it promptly. Additionally, individuals who do not meet eligibility criteria are advised to consider obtaining the vaccine privately, which is widely available at pharmacies at a relatively low cost. Health professionals note that the expense of the vaccine is minimal compared to the potential disruption caused by contracting influenza, including missed workdays and the risk of transmitting the virus to vulnerable populations.

With flu activity on the rise, public health officials are urging a broader uptake of vaccination to mitigate what could be one of the most severe influenza seasons in a decade.
