Paul McCartney has expressed concern over the way his height is portrayed in the upcoming Beatles biopics directed by Sam Mendes, highlighting a source of tension related to the depiction of the band members' physical stature. McCartney revealed his unease during a recent episode of Amy Poehler’s podcast, where he discussed how crucial it was for him that he does not appear shorter than John Lennon in the films.
According to McCartney, he, Lennon, and George Harrison were of similar height during the Beatles' era, with Ringo Starr being slightly shorter. McCartney recounted sending a text message to Mendes after images surfaced showing the actors posing for the recreation of the iconic Abbey Road album cover. In the photos, Harris Dickinson, who plays Lennon, appeared noticeably taller than Paul Mescal, cast as McCartney. The message from McCartney expressed concern and a plea to prevent this height discrepancy, saying, “Sam! Smaller? Don’t do this! You said you wouldn’t do it!”
Mendes reportedly responded by assuring McCartney that the appearance was an optical illusion resulting from camera angles and positioning rather than an intentional choice to depict McCartney as shorter than Lennon.
This marks one of the few moments when the surviving Beatles members have publicly commented on the project. Ringo Starr previously mentioned having discussions with Mendes to adjust a scene he found unsatisfactory, and McCartney has acknowledged Mescal’s guitar-playing skills. However, McCartney’s recent comments suggest that maintaining the accurate physical dynamics between the band members remains a sensitive issue.
The Beatles biopics have attracted significant attention and scrutiny as their release approaches, with audiences debating the creative decisions involved in recreating such a well-documented and beloved chapter in music history. While some questions have centered on casting and authenticity, McCartney’s concerns highlight the importance placed on subtle details like height portrayal, which resonate deeply with those involved in preserving the band’s legacy.
