Relations between U.S. President Donald Trump and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy have shown a notable improvement after a rocky start marked by public tensions earlier in 2025. The warming of ties between the two leaders has coincided with escalating hostilities involving the United States, Israel, and Iran, and appears linked to shared strategic interests amid ongoing conflicts.
Trump and Zelenskyy’s relationship began under strained circumstances, including a contentious meeting in February 2025 that prompted Trump to publicly distance himself from the Ukrainian leader. However, recent interactions suggest a shift. The leaders held several constructive meetings, including a recent White House encounter following Zelenskyy’s attendance at the funeral of Republican Senator Lindsey Graham, a vocal supporter of Ukraine who had maintained an adversarial stance toward Russia. This visit came after positive exchanges at the NATO summit in Ankara, where Trump praised Zelenskyy and indicated support for licensing Ukraine to produce its own Patriot missile interceptors.
Contributing to this thaw was a recent visit to Kyiv by Laura Loomer, a far-right social media influencer known for her previous pro-Russian positions and influence within Trump’s base. After meeting Zelenskyy, Loomer publicly recanted her earlier beliefs shaped by Russian propaganda and reported that her new outlook influenced others in the MAGA movement, including Trump himself.
Experts suggest that shared challenges in managing the US-Israeli conflict with Iran have fostered closer cooperation between Washington and Kyiv. Since February 28, when the U.S. and Israel launched military actions against Iran’s hardline regime, Tehran has retaliated with drone attacks targeting U.S. bases and infrastructure across the Gulf. Ukraine has similarly faced assaults using Iranian-supplied Shahed drones delivered to Russia during Moscow’s invasion of Ukraine in 2022.
In response, Ukraine has emerged as a leader in defensive drone technology and has extended military expertise to Gulf countries, including the UAE, Saudi Arabia, Qatar, and Kuwait, to help counter these threats. Zelenskyy informed British lawmakers in March that approximately 200 Ukrainian military experts had been deployed to the region for this purpose.
Tensions escalated last month when Ukraine struck an Iranian commercial vessel in the Caspian Sea, accusing it of transporting arms to Russia. Iran condemned the attack, claiming the death of an Iranian sailor and warning of retaliation. Ahead of his meeting with Trump, Zelenskyy characterized Iran as an aggressor supplying weapons to Russia and pledged to share intelligence purportedly showing Iranian assistance aimed at U.S. targets.
Some analysts view Zelenskyy’s outreach as strategic, portraying Ukraine as a proactive partner rather than a recipient of aid. Charles Kupchan, a senior fellow at the Council on Foreign Relations, noted that Ukraine’s contributions to addressing shared security challenges enhance its appeal to Trump’s transactional approach to foreign policy. Yet, Trump’s inconsistent stance on the Patriot missile license illustrates the fragility of this evolving alliance.
Concerns remain that Ukraine’s expanding involvement could blur the lines between regional conflicts. Sina Toossi, a fellow at the Center for International Policy, warned that Kyiv’s actions reinforce Iranian perceptions of the Russia-Ukraine war and the U.S.-Iran confrontation as a unified struggle, heightening the risk of broader escalation. While an immediate Iranian strike against Ukraine appears unlikely, Toossi suggested the conflict may increasingly expand geographically as Tehran seeks to impose costs beyond current theaters.
Ukraine’s engagement in the Iran-related conflict also challenges narratives that frame the war primarily as an Israel-aligned campaign, suggesting instead a wider coalition supporting Ukraine’s defense interests. The evolving dynamics between Trump and Zelenskyy, influenced by these intersecting conflicts, underscore the complexity of international alliances amid ongoing regional and global tensions.
