Some argue that Fernandez’s presence might have distracted Martinez or prevented goalkeeper Senne Lammens from intervening. However, the VAR review concluded that Fernandez’s attempt to reach the ball did not influence Martinez’s capacity to clear the cross, allowing the goal to stand.

Manchester United manager Michael Carrick expressed strong dissatisfaction with the decision, calling it “staggering” and questioning the current interpretation of offside rules. Speaking after the match, Carrick said, “I’m confused. We have people in offices with all the screens for this decision. It’s more worrying about if that’s the interpretation of football now… The decision isn’t going to change the season, but it’s had a major impact on the game.”

Despite the controversy, the goal marked a crucial turning point in a tightly contested fixture, delivering a significant setback to Manchester United as they played much of the match with ten men.
