At RHS Garden Hyde Hall in Essex, a major restoration project is underway to revitalize the iconic Rose Rope Walk, originally planted some 50 years ago by former owners Helen and Dick Robinson. Faced with the challenges posed by climate change, garden managers have sought to create a more resilient and sustainable display that can withstand evolving environmental pressures over the coming decades.

The Rose Rope Walk features a pathway flanked by climbers and ramblers trained on wooden frames interconnected by ropes. Over time, the original wooden structure deteriorated, prompting a complete overhaul in 2024. Garden manager Ian Bull explained that while the team wanted to preserve the spirit of the original design, they opted for more durable materials in the restoration. The new supports are constructed from metal with open cylindrical frames to facilitate plant training, and even the ropes have been replaced with metal cables to ensure longevity.

Selecting suitable rose varieties resilient to modern climate conditions proved more challenging. Increasingly erratic weather patterns—warmer, wetter winters and periods of drought—have exacerbated issues such as blackspot, mildew, and rust, which can severely weaken rose plants. Many traditional favorites are no longer viable under these changing conditions. For instance, the well-known David Austin varieties Lady Emma Hamilton and Munstead Wood have been retired by the nursery due to poor adaptability.

Hyde Hall’s team developed bespoke criteria for selecting new cultivars, emphasizing resistance to pests and diseases, heat tolerance, hardiness against environmental stress, and aesthetic qualities such as flower color and fragrance. They consulted with rose breeders, trialers, and growers to compile a list of 100 potential candidates, which was further narrowed down to 48 varieties—39 new cultivars and nine classics retained from the original planting.

Before replanting, the soil underwent treatment to address rose replant disease, a condition caused by nematodes that can harm newly introduced roses. Rather than replacing the soil, the team opted for biological remediation, adding organic matter and manure and planting French marigolds (Tagetes patula) the year prior to trap and reduce nematode populations.

Planting took place in February with bare-root roses installed along the pathway’s 24 metal cylinders, each supporting one climber and one rambler rose. Ramblers, closer to wild species roses, are generally more robust but tend to have paler blooms, while climbers offer a wider palette of colors. Notable cultivars already establishing well include the climbers ‘Peach Melba’ and ‘Summer Wine’ and ramblers such as ‘Goldfinch’ and ‘Sunny Siluetta’.

To reduce disease pressure and avoid monoculture risks, the rope walk incorporates companion planting with perennials like Salvia nemorosa ‘Caradonna’ and the pale-pink geranium ‘Dreamland,’ interspersed with self-seeded marigolds.

Bull described the effort as “a live experiment,” acknowledging that the full impact of the restoration will only become evident over several years as the roses mature and are pruned for the first time in autumn. The project highlights ongoing efforts within horticulture to adapt classic garden displays for resilience amid climate change, balancing tradition with innovation.

Among the new cultivars introduced are climbers such as Starlight Symphony, Scent from Heaven, Perfume Dream, and Penny Lane, alongside ramblers like Sweet Siluetta, Open Arms, and Albrighton Rambler. Old favorites retained include ‘Climbing Cécile Brünner,’ Mary Delany, ‘New Dawn,’ Little Rambler, and The Generous Gardener.

Experts suggest future rose cultivation may increasingly rely on modern series bred specifically for pest and disease resistance and could include experimentation with alternative rootstocks beyond the commonly used Rosa laxa, such as Rosa persica, native to the Middle East, to further enhance durability in changing climates.
