British talent received significant recognition in the latest Golden Globe nominations announced ahead of the January 11 ceremony. Cynthia Erivo, known for her starring role in the musical "Wicked: For Good," was nominated for Best Actress in a Motion Picture – Musical or Comedy. The London-born actress, 38, has garnered attention following the global box office success of the film, which has grossed over £400 million since its release last month.
Emily Blunt, also from London, earned a nomination for Best Supporting Actress for her role in the sports biopic "The Smashing Machine." She will compete in a category that includes Ariana Grande, Erivo’s co-star, who received a nod for portraying Glinda in "Wicked: For Good."
The historical drama "Hamnet," based on Shakespearean themes, received a nomination for Best Motion Picture. Its leading Irish actors, Paul Mescal and Jessie Buckley, were also nominated, adding to the film’s acclaim.
On the television front, the British Netflix series "Adolescence," which centers on the aftermath of a teenage stabbing, achieved five nominations. The show’s principal cast members—including Stephen Graham, 16-year-old Owen Cooper, Ashley Walters, and Erin Doherty—were all recognized. The series was second only to HBO’s "White Lotus," which led with six nominations.
Other notable British nominees highlighted include Gary Oldman for his performance in "Slow Horses," Dame Helen Mirren for "MobLand," and Aimee Lou Wood for "White Lotus." These acknowledgments reflect the strong presence of UK talent across both film and television categories in this year’s Golden Globe Awards.
