Widam Food, a publicly traded Qatari company and the primary operator of Al Wakrah Central Abattoir as well as other private slaughterhouses, has entered into a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with the Qatar Livestock Society (Anaam) to enhance the marketing of livestock products from local breeders. The agreement was announced on July 22 and outlines plans to promote Qatari livestock through several key sales points and digital platforms.

Under the terms of the MoU, Widam Food will display products from domestic breeders at its pens located in Al Wakrah Central Abattoir, Umm Salal Central Market, Al Shahaniya Central Abattoir, and Abu Nakhla sales area. These offerings will also be accessible year-round on Widam’s online application, providing greater market reach for local livestock. Anaam will facilitate coordination with breeders to ensure that imported products align with consumer demand in terms of specifications and weight.

The collaboration further extends to the acquisition and distribution of breeding ewes from productive breeds. This initiative aims to bolster the development and genetic improvement of Qatar’s livestock by making such breeding stock available to local breeders in cooperation with Anaam.

The partnership supports broader government efforts to strengthen food security and domestic red meat production. For more than 16 years, the Ministry of Commerce and Industry (MoCI), working alongside the Ministry of Municipality, has implemented programs to back Qatari citizens engaged in livestock breeding. These policies have led to significant improvements in production efficiency and contributed to reducing Qatar’s reliance on imports.

Anaam, in its role, continues to promote the livestock sector and assist breeders by acting as an intermediary between industry stakeholders and government bodies. The memorandum formalizes this ongoing support and is aligned with national objectives to enhance self-sufficiency in food resources through sustainable domestic production.
