Mia Bieniemy, wife of Kansas City Chiefs offensive coordinator Eric Bieniemy, was shot Sunday evening at the couple’s residence in Ashburn, Virginia, according to local authorities. Their son, Elijah Bieniemy, 27, was arrested in connection with the incident and faces multiple charges, the Loudoun County Sheriff’s Office reported.

Elijah Bieniemy has been charged with malicious wounding, use of a firearm in the commission of a felony, and discharge of a firearm inside a dwelling. Following his arrest, he was detained without bail at the Loudoun County Adult Detention Center.

Deputies responded to the scene around 7:30 p.m. after receiving a report of a shooting. Upon arrival, they found an adult female who had sustained gunshot injuries. She was promptly transported to a hospital for treatment of serious injuries, the sheriff’s office said.

At the time of the shooting, Eric Bieniemy was at the Chiefs’ training camp in St. Joseph, Missouri, located at Missouri Western State University. Chiefs head coach Andy Reid provided an update after Monday morning’s practice, stating that Mia Bieniemy was in stable condition and describing her as “one of God’s good blessings.” Reid confirmed that Eric Bieniemy had left training camp to address the situation in Virginia but did not specify when he might return.

In Bieniemy’s absence, team passing game coordinator Joe Bleymaier assumed offensive coordinator duties and called offensive plays during Monday’s practice. Bleymaier is entering his 11th season with the Chiefs as an offensive assistant.

This season marks Eric Bieniemy’s return to Kansas City after serving as the team’s offensive coordinator from 2018 to 2022. He had spent the 2023 season as offensive coordinator for the Washington Commanders. The Bieniemys’ Ashburn home is located approximately three miles from the Commanders’ practice facility.
